I Love my car - Camry - with Hillbilly Roof Racks

Lattice

The Camry (2006 with > 400,000 km) is fitted with my 4' x 5' wooden roof racks, and loaded with 13 lattice panels that Nick built panel by panel with a gorgeous novel design that he worked out in the grey matter and then tweaked by trial and error. This is to match up with that deck he built HERE shown down this blog at August 3,2025. The lattice is privacy lattice in the owner's color choice. The lattice is mounted in dado'd decking frames to be suspended from the rim joists. Minor stabilization strips will be used. Look closely at what can be accomplished while doing nothing at all. Stunning work Nick. Hit the contact button if you'd like Nick to build you a code-compliant beautiful deck.

Mushroom Trip - Finally

I like eating mushrooms like most people. Within my diverse community everyone to a person advocates about the benefits of mushrooms- Update:not Nick. My interest was solely that they are yummy with steak. I have memories of casually being perplexed by them when I was very young and when I thought that they seemed fragile compared to everything around them. I loved the puff balls.

My interest was peaked with my wife's deep dive into dried and cooked mushrooms. People around me knew all this information about them in relation to health and nutrition. So. I attended to the conversation. Oliver Bieker introduced me to Jolanta Grossman who hosts mushroom/eco/foraging tours here in NS. It was difficult to arrange but I was finally able to attend an outing hosted by her in the greater Halifax area. The image below is a link to her facebook page. I don't do facebook so I can't attest to the content as a whole. What she availed during the outing with 7 people was very rewarding.

Mushrooms

I am sitting in a Stickley office chair that Sam bought for me from a retired single Polish-Connecticut investment broker who, in the process of the chair purchase, gave me a dazzling lecture about mushrooms for 2 hours. Jolanta Grossman is also Polish and a former investment representative obsessed with mushrooms. This has to qualify as SYNCRONICITY. They are made for each other. I may have to play cupid.

The tour was worthwhile, incuding the Cleveland Beach seaweed tour. I highly reccomend the tour/foraging if only to see Jolanta's secret hobbit enclave of moss silenced peace. Seriously! Check it out.

I bought a bag of kelp for Sam. The product is made by Jolanta herself.

Sunday Morning in Peace

I awoke early and had the urge to work. No coffee yet. Just email catch-up. I have some things I need to get done today, now that it is fall and winter will be upon us. But today is the Lord's day and He gets my attension today.

The Gift of Foresight

The Curse of the Cassandra Complex

The gift of foresight is the ability to predict future events with uncanny accuracy, often seen as a blessing that allows one to prepare for what lies ahead. However, the Cassandra complex, named after the Greek prophetess cursed to foresee tragedies but never be believed, transforms this gift into a burden, as the seer’s warnings are dismissed or ignored. Those with this complex may feel isolated, frustrated, or powerless, trapped by knowledge others refuse to acknowledge. While foresight offers clarity, the Cassandra complex underscores the emotional toll of being unheard, creating a paradox of insight and impotence. Resignation.

Then we have today's gospel....

Luke 16:31
"If they do not hear Moses and the prophets, neither will they be convinced if some one should rise from the dead.”

I see what is coming sometimes. I sometimes say what I see, and it never goes well. People either do not want to know or they interpret the good or bad forcasts as manipulation or threats, then retribution follows. It is weird. Sometimes is too often I guess. So I must hush myself on certain matters and just let shit hit the fan.

Evolution of Standard Frequencies

I heard somebody changed "frequencies"

I have an alternative theory...

Frequency is generally described as "events per time period".

Acoustic frequencies are mores specifically described as "cycles per second". The tuning fork in my hand above vibrates at 440 vibrations per second. I use it to tune string instruments. If frequencies changed, what changed? The # of vibrations or the length of a second? HA! I ask you a simple question. When did the second, the increment of time that we call the "second" become standardized among the common population?

I suggest that it was not the "frequency" that was changed, rather the second.

How much did the second have to change to shift A natural from 432 to 440?

440-432=8 and 8/432x100 = 1.85%

So is it possible, that the second shortened in length of time by 1.85% then the frequency would be noted as 440 Hz and not noted a 432 Hz anymore, and the sound actually never changed as it is perceived by the human ear?

Test yourself. Count to 60 without looking at a timer. How long did it take? When I count a minute, it is usually about 57 seconds because I count slowly. Everyone is different. Imagine having no clock 400 years ago and you were a bell maker. If you counted 59 seconds instead of 60, then your A Natural would be 432. But A Natural is A Natural regardless of what you call it. Neanderthals sang music and made bone flutes. They had no clocks or tuning forks. They had cochlea. Their cochlea's were very similar to modern humans.

The second was not standardized until 1920s and 1960-7, based on the vibration properties of the atom cesium. Before that, it was chaos. A second approximately the same time between resting beats of a human heart.

Before standard tuning forks, orchestras would tune their instruments to the "arbitrary" tuning of the "First Violin". They still do. That pleasant noise that lasts about 30 seconds before a piece is played? That is the orchestra harmonizing to a standard, the First Violin. There were tuning forks but they were slightly different across continents back when Bach was writing Prelude in C.

So I say, the frequencies did not change, rather, the second got shorter making the number that represents the frequency change. 432 in 1400 AD is the same as 440 nowadays.

So frequency did not change at all. The second changed.

So what about church bells you say? That is whole other problem. The 3 frequencies that dominate a western church bell were NEVER in harmony. The bells were cast according to a shape, and little post-casting tuning could be done. The blend of brass and tin and copper and impurities was not controlled. Nowadays, the tuning of modern church bells is based on exact control of the bell material, and the ability to machine the shape of the large bells, while tuning, and the standard second.

Reassessing Dunning-Kruger and Imposter Syndrome

A friend, Tony, dropped in and mentioned to me the Dunning-Kruger effect. I had no idea what this was. I have since read up on the study by David Dunning and Justin Kruger and obtained the source information. The seminal 1999 paper is "Unskilled and Unaware of It: How Difficulties in Recognizing One's Own Incompetence Lead to Inflated Self-Assessments" by Justin Kruger and David Dunning, published in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology (Vol. 77, No. 6, pp. 1121–1134). You can download the complete PDF at this link.

I put a copy on my server here as well.

After I read the paper, I noticed that the language in the paper was oddly familiar. I was not surprized by the observations and rules that came from the numbers. So looked at the paper from the POV where I had encountered the principles before. What I found was that by engaging the psychological phenomena of the Dunning Kruger effect and imposter syndrome through a Catholic moral lens, I recognized these concepts as modern articulations of age old human tendencies, pride, vainglory, and fear, long recognized in theology, philosophy, and literature. Their scientific framing, while valuable, risks scientization, the tendency to repackage timeless wisdom as novel empirical discoveries, potentially overshadowing the deeper moral and spiritual dimensions of self knowledge and virtue. This exploration reframes these phenomena within the virtues of humility and courage, and the vices of pride, vainglory, and fear, offering a path to authentic understanding of ones allignment with God's plan and His given gifts, illustrated through composite personalities. Consideration is also given as a sub topic to the possibility that the Dunning Kruger paper of 1999 may be a scientification of long known human attributes. Northrop Frye would have been a better scholar to tackle this subtopic to be sure. I am an imposter. :)

The Dunning Kruger Effect

This presentation is 20 minutes and is concise enough.

The Dunning Kruger effect, as described in the 1999 study by David Dunning and Justin Kruger, posits that individuals with limited competence in a domain often overestimate their abilities due to a lack of metacognitive skill to recognize their deficiencies. Conversely, those with high expertise may underestimate their proficiency, assuming others share their capabilities. Skepticism toward this model arises from its potential oversimplification, overlooking factors such as cultural influences on self esteem or contextual variations in confidence. The effect highlights a misapprehension of one’s own ignorance, often rooted in an unwillingness to consider alternative perspectives. Such resistance can isolate individuals from truth and growth, reflecting not merely a cognitive bias but a moral failing when it stems from pride or vainglory.

"Pride is the beginning of sin, and the heart of pride is the refusal to seek truth." — St. Augustine

Imposter Syndrome

Imposter syndrome manifests as persistent self doubt, where individuals feel fraudulent despite evident achievements. Often triggered by comparison in high achieving environments, it can stifle potential and hinder contributions. While sometimes mistaken for humility, imposter syndrome aligns more closely with fear, a lack of courage to trust in one’s God given role or to risk failure. This struggle recalls biblical accounts, such as Moses’s doubt in his calling (Exodus 4:10), suggesting a timeless human challenge. The scientific label risks scientization, reducing a spiritual and moral issue to a psychological one, potentially overlooking the call to courage rooted in faith.

"Fear is useless; what is needed is trust." — Jesus Christ (Luke 8:50)

Humility versus Pride and Vainglory

In Catholic theology, humility is the truthful acknowledgment of one’s dependence on God, recognizing gifts as divine endowments rather than self earned merits. It fosters gratitude and openness to correction, aligning with St. Thomas Aquinas’s emphasis on docility, the willingness to be taught. Pride elevates the self above truth, manifesting as an overconfidence that dismisses alternative viewpoints, while vainglory seeks empty praise through boasting. The Dunning Kruger effect can be seen as a modern restatement of these vices, where unrecognized ignorance leads to a refusal to listen, isolating one from community and truth. As St. Thomas Aquinas notes, true knowledge requires docility, countering the prideful isolation of overconfidence.

"Humility is the foundation of all the other virtues hence, in the soul in which this virtue does not exist there cannot be any other virtue except in mere appearance." — St. Augustine

Courage versus Fear

Courage, or fortitude, empowers one to act on God’s gifts despite uncertainty or fear of judgment. Catholic teaching urges boldness in using talents for the common good, as illustrated in the Parable of the Talents (Matthew 25:14-30). Imposter syndrome, often misinterpreted as humility, reflects fear that undermines trust in divine providence, preventing the full expression of one’s vocation. Overcoming this requires courage to trust that “we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works” (Ephesians 2:10). St. John the Baptist’s humility, “He must increase, but I must decrease” (John 3:30), pairs with St. Paul’s courage: “I can do all things through him who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).

"Have no fear of them, nor be troubled, but in your hearts honor Christ the Lord." — 1 Peter 3:14-15

A Moral Spectrum

The Dunning Kruger effect and imposter syndrome form a moral spectrum: prideful overconfidence and vainglory at one extreme, and fearful self diminishment at the other. Catholic virtue resides in the balance, humble confidence that honors gifts while remaining open to growth, and courage that empowers action without hesitation. St. Ignatius of Loyola’s discernment principles guide this balance, urging reflection on one’s gifts and openness to God’s will. The scientization of these phenomena, while insightful, can oversimplify their moral and spiritual depth, whereas Catholic wisdom offers a richer lens for understanding human flaws and virtues.

Illustrative Personalities

Four composite personalities below highlight how these psychological dynamics manifest and how Catholic virtues offer a path to redemption.

Alex: Overcoming Fear Through Courage

Alex, a professional in a competitive field like medicine or academia, achieves notable successes but grapples with imposter syndrome, fearing inadequacy among peers. This fear once silenced Alex, leading to withheld contributions. Observing colleagues who exhibit Dunning Kruger like overconfidence, rejecting diverse perspectives with unfounded certainty, Alex recognizes pride’s isolating effects. Through prayer and Ignatian discernment, Alex cultivates humility, seeking feedback from mentors, and courage, sharing expertise publicly, supressing his inappropriate fear of being discovered as an imposter who is incompetent. This journey aligns with Catholic social teaching’s call to serve the common good, exercise courage in the face of fear, to allow himself to be known. These theological terms map well into the science-a-fied Dunning and Kruger

“The human person is called to serve others in love, for in this service one finds true fulfillment.” — St. John Paul II

Sophia: The Obstinate Braggart

Sophia, a woman of specialized knowledge, embodies obstinacy and narrowness in her views, compensating for limited broader understanding with rigid, unconventional beliefs. A habitual braggart, she dominates conversations with boasts of her expertise, often rendering interactions with other people as tiresome. Her profile fits the Dunning Kruger effect, where overconfidence stems from unrecognized self-ignorance and a refusal to consider alternative perspectives. In Catholic terms, Sophia’s behavior reflects vainglory, seeking empty praise rather than truth. Her redemption lies in embracing humility and docility, opening to correction and God’s grace.

“Humility does not disturb or disquiet, however great it may be; it comes with peace, delight, and calm.” — St. Teresa of Ávila

Elena: Obstinacy and Legal Troubles

Elena represents a woman whose stubbornness and limited insight lead to repeated legal troubles. Clinging to misguided convictions without heeding advice, she exemplifies the Dunning Kruger effect’s overestimation of competence, resulting in poor decisions and consequences. From a Catholic perspective, Elena’s obstinacy reflects pride’s refusal to seek counsel, as warned in Proverbs. Prudence and humility could guide her toward wiser choices, fostering openness to truth and community.

“Where there is no guidance, a people falls, but in an abundance of counselors there is safety” — Proverbs 11:14"

Isabella: The Influence of Past Beauty

Isabella, a woman striking in her youth, grew accustomed to patronization, which shaped her self perception. This external validation may have insulated her from critical feedback, fostering overconfidence akin to the Dunning Kruger effect. While research suggests women generally underestimate their abilities more than men, attractiveness can complicate self assessment, potentially amplifying misplaced confidence when external praise overshadows merit. In Catholic framing, Isabella’s reliance on fleeting attributes like beauty risks vanity, a form of vainglory. Humility invites her to ground her identity in God’s enduring gifts, cultivating courage to engage authentically.

"By serving others, we discover our true selves and fulfill God’s purpose." — St. John Paul II

To navigate this moral landscape, one might adopt:

Reassessing the Dunning Kruger effect and imposter syndrome through a Catholic lens reveals their moral dimensions as restatements of age old struggles with pride, vainglory, and fear. While their scientific framing offers insight, its scientization can oversimplify the deeper issues tackled by the wisdom of Catholic theology. By cultivating humility, docility, and courage, one aligns with God’s call to authentic self knowledge and service. These virtues, illustrated through Alex, Sophia, Elena, and Isabella, guide individuals toward a balanced life of truth and love, contributing to the common good an growth of their own vocation.

Comparison of Absolute Cures: Externally Applied vs. Naturopathic/Holistic Methods

This blog entry compares definitive cures from conventional medicine (targeted interventions like drugs and surgery) with those from naturopathic, holistic, or nutritional approaches (natural remedies, diet, and lifestyle changes). Nutritional cures often address deficiencies that the body cannot resolve without specific inputs. Surgical cures are entirely external. Incidentally, I was present at the home of a holistic nutritionist when her nephew's life was saved after he went into anaphylaxis and was given 2 epinephrine injections. Many prayers were said and answered. The unavailability of ambulance services was the complicating factor as I recall.

Conventional Medicine Cures

  1. Bacterial Infections (e.g., Strep Throat): Cured with antibiotics like penicillin.
  2. Urinary Tract Infections (UTIs): Antibiotics such as nitrofurantoin.
  3. Pneumonia (Bacterial): Amoxicillin or similar antibiotics.
  4. Syphilis: Penicillin injections.
  5. Gonorrhea: Ceftriaxone injection.
  6. Chlamydia: Azithromycin or doxycycline.
  7. Hepatitis C: Direct-acting antivirals like sofosbuvir.
  8. Appendicitis: Surgical appendectomy.
  9. Gallstones (Symptomatic): Cholecystectomy surgery.
  10. Cataracts: Surgical lens replacement.
  11. Basal Cell Carcinoma (Skin Cancer): Mohs surgery.
  12. Testicular Cancer: Chemotherapy and surgery.
  13. Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (Childhood): Multi-agent chemotherapy.
  14. Scurvy: Vitamin C supplementation.
  15. Rickets: Vitamin D and calcium administration.
  16. Beriberi: Thiamine (Vitamin B1) replacement.
  17. Pellagra: Niacin (Vitamin B3) therapy.
  18. Tetanus: Antitoxin and supportive care.
  19. Botulism: Botulinum antitoxin.
  20. Anaphylaxis: Epinephrine injection.

Naturopathic/Holistic/Nutritional Cures

  1. Scurvy: Vitamin C from citrus fruits or rose hips, reversing deficiency completely.
  2. Rickets: Sun exposure and vitamin D-rich foods like fatty fish, restoring bone health.
  3. Beriberi: Thiamine-rich whole grains and legumes, curing neurological symptoms.
  4. Pellagra: Niacin from peanuts, meat, or brewer's yeast, eliminating the "4 Ds."
  5. Vitamin A Deficiency (Night Blindness): Carrots, sweet potatoes, and liver, restoring vision.
  6. Iodine Deficiency (Goiter): Seaweed or iodized salt, shrinking thyroid enlargement.
  7. Iron-Deficiency Anemia: Iron-rich spinach, lentils, and vitamin C enhancers, normalizing blood counts.
  8. Folate Deficiency Anemia: Leafy greens like spinach, fully replenishing stores.
  9. Vitamin B12 Deficiency: Fermented foods or nutritional yeast for vegans, resolving neuropathy.
  10. Acute Diarrhea (in Children): Oral rehydration solution with salts and sugars, preventing dehydration death.
  11. Common Cold Duration: Zinc from pumpkin seeds or lozenges, shortening illness by 33%.
  12. Toothache (Dental Abscess): Clove oil (eugenol), providing natural analgesic and antimicrobial relief.
  13. Motion Sickness/Nausea: Ginger root tea, completely alleviating symptoms in most cases.
  14. Osteoarthritis Pain: Turmeric (curcumin) with black pepper, reducing inflammation equivalently to NSAIDs.
  15. Wound Infections: Manuka honey, eradicating bacteria and promoting healing.
  16. Minor Burns: Aloe vera gel, accelerating re-epithelialization without scarring.
  17. Constipation: High-fiber prunes or psyllium, restoring normal bowel function.
  18. Insomnia: Valerian root tea, improving sleep quality to pharmaceutical levels.
  19. Mild Anxiety: Lavender oil aromatherapy, reducing symptoms comparably to lorazepam.
  20. Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Peppermint oil capsules, relieving symptoms in 75% of cases.

Estimated Lives Saved

Conventional Medicine: Over the past century, externally applied interventions like antibiotics, and surgeries have saved an estimated billions of lives globally (e.g., antibiotics alone prevented ~200 million deaths from infections since 1940; modern cancer treatments save ~27,000-45,000 lives annually from breast cancer alone).

Naturopathic/Holistic/Nutritional Methods: Primarily through preventing and curing deficiency diseases, these have saved an estimated hundreds of millions of lives (e.g., vitamin A supplementation averts ~500,000 child deaths yearly; iodization programs have prevented cretinism in millions; "Food is Medicine" initiatives could avert 292,000 cardiovascular events over lifetimes).

Both approaches complement each other, with conventional excelling in acute infections and holistic in prevention and chronic support. Beyond we have cures achieved by the Holy Spirit alone. I have addressed this avenue abundantly. In any case, the body is a wonderful mystery and there is place for cures, delivered externally to the body, and to assist the natural processes of the body.

Equinox & Worship of Money & Liars & Usary

It difficult to serve two masters. The love of money and God. People who lie about small things will lie about big things. Usually for pride's sake or for money.

Despite this dark and heavy language extent from today's readings, I sit here in prayer, anticipating Mass, giving my day to my maker, begging to know Him. Coffee, solitude, polyeleos.

Today's Gospel: Luke 16:10:13

He who is faithful in a very little is faithful also in much; and he who is dishonest in a very little is dishonest also in much.
If then you have not been faithful in the unrighteous mammon, who will entrust to you the true riches?
And if you have not been faithful in that which is another’s, who will give you that which is your own?
No servant can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon.

What and who is doing the healing - and for whom?

I recently read this on a holistic healer's web site. I suggest that you read it and consider what she is saying....and doubt her explicit words, for her benefit.

I work in a different column of the health realm, largely associated with the innovation of interventional surgical and therapeutic devices for surgery mostly. I am well acquainted with the essential truth that the above healer states: that the body heals itself. But, I believe she is simply asserting a point, that is derived from the assertion of a philosophy. She says "...simply create an environment where self-healing is more possible. Nothing external cures..." I believe that healing is not just by the body enabled by diet, medicines etc. I believe that her personal and sincere desire that her clients heal is a substantial component to how her clients respond to her guidance. She wills the good. As such, her clients, respond and improve. She says that their bodies heal themselves. I say that statement is appropriate professional modesty couched inside the afforementioned philosophy. Her philosophy is self-reliance - at all costs. Autonomy, born of tribulations.

Extending care is important. Not the 'health-care" that is doled out, rather, the intimate care that extends from her empathy. Suffering for others. I call it an embryo of prayer in its simplest form. Her desire that your body heals is part of and fundamental to the healing process. She could give you a glass of distilled water and I am sure that you would be healed by the generousity. So my modest friend is doing you a minor disservice that, she must. In her modesty. Wouldn't you? I have said that she is doing something that extends from the Holy Spirit. So having a healer who is dedicated to healing you is a big part of the healing. We are deeply connected to each other and God. Willing the good, beauty, and truth is powerful medicine.

Think about the act of loving each other. Desiring peace to a person. Worrying about a person. Agape love. All that is external to he or she whom is beheld, loved, cared for or prayed for. We know, as a fact, that we empathetically feel pain when seeing a person get hurt. The connection that a mother has with her son is external and real. Think of how your body would be affected if you suffered long term the constant anxiety that you feel at those moments your baby boy fell down and smashed his face open? You'd look like hell, due to that horrible external force.

What is all that external stuff, the external emotional stuff? It is beyond our meat and matter. Yet it is real, invisable, and powerful. It is so powerful that when 3 persons loved each other so much that all the beauty, truth and goodness that erupted from that love then overflowed and became the universe. We have all that between us, among us and within us. Where does the invisable world intersect with the immune system? or your healing processes? I claim that there is no boundary to the self. Our bodies literally sing with each other in a demonstably real way. Entangled, connected, co-dependent. Go to "God's Backdoor to our minds".

exerpt from Footprints in the Sand...

The Lord replied, "My daughter, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you."
- Carolyn Carty, 1963

Here are some studies that show exactly my nuanced point. Love and affection and empathy matter a great deal in positive outcomes of treatment. The conclusion is that this holistic healer engages her patients and clients, and, in part because of her approach, voice, demeaner, word choice and state of grace, directly influences the healing process. Yes, the body of the client heals itself, but the healer clearly does healing too. Maybe her word choice is not modesty entirely. Maybe it is encouragement to the clients to participate and rely on their own treatment regime. A gift of the illusion of control. I am speculating.

Inventing hurts

I was tasked to solve a problem a while back and I really did not know enough to actually implement a solution. I studied the problem. It was an surgical procedure problem, that is all I will say. So I watched countless surgeries, read papers on related procedures. Mostly I agonized over it, lost sleep, felt tired and dislocated. An event has to happen in my case. It is like a line from the Tempest, a 1982 movie with John Cassavetes based loosely on Shakespeare's "The Tempest":

"Show me the Magic"

It is like a conjuring by Prospero....watch a few seconds of this trailer after 2:40 ....

It arrives like a storm....sharp with lightning bolts and amorphous like clouds...punctuations of extreme clarity and veils and shades of uncertainty. It precipitates like rain, and agglomerates like an ocean, and the storm passes to calm. For me. A calm resolution. Then the disciplined necessary memorialization, that always precipitates further novelty...like summer rain that starts and stops and starts again, but the satisfaction of that smell that summer rain gives...THAT is the drug of invention.

I decided to clean my office, a sure sign that a birth was immanent, a birth of new idea. I have ideas every day but most are pointless, but it is always amusing and enjoyable to think these things through. This particular solution was different. It was difficult and gnarly. It was specified and constrained. I had to work inside a tight box.

Creative people suffer this anxiety as part of the creative process. I recognize it and love it when it happens. It is enjoyable to witness as an observer, watching invention happen, little experiments, thought experiments.

So it came at me this time so fast I could not write it all down. It happened to me in the middle of me tidying my office. This time I had the presence of mind to record myself talking to myself about it. That was cool. I suspect that I will file a patent by Monday. The beneficiary of the divine event will be happy.

So I was intellectually preoccupied and committed elsewhere.

Betrothal of Julie and Evan

Evan proposed to Julie at Peggy's Cove this afternoon. She accepted his proposal. Nick was creeping on them (by design) and captured the once-in-lifetime event. Here I am, privileged to have been present and as a witness to a Catholic Betrothal officiated by Fr Nathanael. It was my first observance of a betrothal and I knew nothing of the blessing and promise until yesterday. It was lovely. Look at Julie showing her new ring. What a great day. I was happy to be there, I believe that God's love has fallen upon them. I felt nourished just being present. Nick will be Evan's BEST MAN. Even though the betrothal was a catholic act officially presided over by Father Nathaneal, his hospitality was rich and purified the moment. I look forward to their sacrament of Holy Matrimony in Winnipeg next year which I intend to crash and to witness with Sam.

The Firey Serpent - Moses' SARAF

LINK - The symbol is the Caduceus, [Ka-doo'-see-us] used by healers for 1000s of years.

Today's first reading - Numbers 21:4-9 and the Gospel is John 3:13-17.

Numbers 21:9 - So Moses made a bronze serpent, and set it on a pole; and if a serpent bit any man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
John 3:14 - And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, so must the Son of man be lifted up,

The serpent (saraf) was a healer, a vector of Grace.
OPEN YOUR EYES

In ancient Egypt, the firey serpent was referred to as a SARAF, but it was not an evil entity, rather, it was good. The adoption of the word and the idea "Seraphim" by the hebrews likely was as a result of their long enslavement in Eygypt, resulting in the inevitable adoption of egyptian words and ideas. Still a heavenly entity amongst the Hebrews. The fire of the seraphim is the radiance of Grace. Now, seraphim serves us as the name of the supreme angels that, in Isaiah 6:1-8, attend to God at His throne before His alter and extending healing Grace to Isaiah. Saraf (seraph) is the root of the name of the princess Sarah (Sarai) the wife of Abraham, mother of Isaac who was the father of Jacob and Esau. In our very reading today we have the Saraf Healing through Grace.

At the same time, we see the serpents having caused death of the sinful Israelites, raised up on a standard as a reminder of their sins, and the crucifixion of Jesus is a reminder of our sins, and our redemption. The allusion is tricky to be sure.

Open your eyes.

Music entangled with revelation

I had a great moment this morning watching a video about the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impact on jupiter in July 1994. Levy was reminiscing about the moment they realized that a 20+ fragment comet was heading toward jupiter. He described the pieces, of the comet in terms of elements of Beethoven 1st symphony since he stated that as he was telling Shoemaker that there was a comet approaching, the 4th movement of the symphony erupted, punctuating the moment as the main comet preceded by delicate smaller fragments as was represented in the musical story. It was a wonderful and perfect musical metaphor with stunning visual of yellow of gold and red orbs transiting the screen as he described the events whilst listening to the symphony. It was just excellent crossing of senses: music, cosmology, physics, and color. Color-Music-Intellectual Truth all in experiential harmony.

This is a short video of a Hubble Telescope series of images of the Shoemaker-Levy 9 impacts on jupiter in July of 1994.

Beethoven's 1st Symphony movement #4, which, according to Levy, is like the comet impact on jupiter. Enjoy the music for its sake at least.

Here I am Lord

At FM645 and we sang this. Music provided by Mike and Tim. I loved it and more, its reference to Isaiah 6:1-8, to my theme of seraphim and Grace, and the implications of taking up a cross for thankless people.

Fire at Wendall Wambolt's House

Wendall Wambolts garage caught fire Tuesday Sept 9. Some damage to the house. A Skil lawnmower lithium battery went off and set the place ablaze. Gabriel and Wendall seem unharmed. They have a temporary residence in Dartmouth.

COMPLETED - ZOOM Call on the most recent Hearing at SCoNS Port Hawkesbury

COMPLETED! Wednesday September 10, at 8 pm ADT

UPDATE: This was completed.

My intension for today......Hmmmmm

On the face of it I would say it is noble but, it is a tangle. Taking a breath...I'd say there is a tremendous good afoot. There is beauty. There is Goodness. I have to keep pausing to ensure that I am following a reliable road map. So thus I pause, say a little prayer, tweak the goal. Make room for the needs of someone else. Pause for tea.

Setting Up the New MIG - Argon/CO2 Welder

I made progress with the stair railings for the new concrete steps next to my driveway. I had to zero-in on the welding. Do I buy welded railings or do I build wood railings or do I weld some, knowing that I am a terrible welder? The new welder proves that I am good enough. I will use a argon/CO2 sheild gas and MIG the steel together. All I accomplished here was to get all the pieces of the system connected and operational. Thanks Dan Baird.

Gratitude on Sunday- 1) Life, 2) Gift of Faith 3) Wife 4) Others

1) I am grateful of the welcoming generosity and hospitality of my parents who, in their suffering, ignorance and labour, created me and raised me. 2) I was given the gift of faith in God which derived from wonder and something within me as my family did not regularly attend church. I have always felt reassured by His presence and aware that any suffering that I bore, had meaning and helped me become, 3) I, as a naive young man, was seduced by a beautiful, naive young woman and she extended love to me which gave me confidence and provided a place to extend the bounty of love that I received by Grace. 4) So many...Truth, Beauty and Goodness. Ok. Now your turn.

Tinnitus - Looking for a treatment or a cure...

I have been using LOUD equipment grinding my concrete steps. I was using ear protection (mostly) but it set off sustained bout of tinnitus. It was special. It had 2 tones. I am concerned that the cillia in my cochlea may be all old and tired. I have a 1 Hz beat frequency in my right ear. Let me know if you can suggest anything. See July 13 below. I am very interested in this subject.

The beginning of my understanding...

This moment was a transformational event when I was 18. I was at home, laying on the floor watching TV, watching William F. Buckley have a talk with Malcolm Muggeridge. At 6:52 in, WFB posits the requirement of "Grace" in an intellectually serious way. Then at 7:19 WFB asserts the connection of an observer and Grace. I became open at that moment. Four years later, I asked Deacon Jim McLevy, during my marriage preparation course, "what is the nature of Grace?" (LINK - to the above reference to King Lear by Muggeridge at 11:15 if your are curious - LINK) My questions have never really stopped. Later, after my marriage to Sam, and before our children began to arrive, I became intellectually aware of Isaiah 6:1-8 ( recited here below in the next Youtube video ) at Mass at Saint Mary's Bacilica. That awareness unified, in me, uncreated Grace as a pursuit of the Seraph. SERAPH-GRACE

My life-long observation of interaction involving Grace between the Seraph and Isaiah was uniquely punctuated on November 6, 2024 at 1:30 PM when a woman, self-employed as a naturopathic healer, brought me over a cup of tea, and re-introduced herself to me as SARA GRACE. This woman, who's name I did not fully know, had previously invited me to a healing event presided over by Father Mark Cherry on April 19, 2023 at 6:30 PM. A new experience for me. Presumably, those attending were expecting a supernatural healing. I attended and during the event I, internally, privately, asked the Holy Spirit to enter me. He did. I changed but I didn't say so when SARA GRACE asked me.
The name "SARA GRACE" means: the burning one who carries the love of God.

The universe is rationally intelligible since it is a consequence of design by God. This assumption is fundamental to science. Thought and prayer and Grace are part of that design. As a dedicated advocate of proper science, with the recent revelation of the potential source of human consciousness (distinct from thought) within the 615,000 Ghz vibration of the surface of the alpha type cytoskeletal microtubules, (Stuart Hameroff and Roger Penrose) I am working/thinking/writing/talking/praying to describe the interaction between the rational human mind (matter) and Grace (Spirit) from a catholic POV, in context to the emerging facts noted above. Wish me good luck. :) It may well be transcendental. Also, contact me if you want to correspond. Many people seem to be interested in this.

Only you can stop what is coming. You must say stop.

Electric Circus appropriate...

I heard this and the light show cometh.... not sure what the song is about.

I am working on a medical device design today. A friend is using my shop and driveway to finish a deck project.

corpus

Nick is making lattice panels for the deck project. We came up with a prefabrication strategy for assembly simplicity on site. All lattice panels are designed to be suspended from the rim joists of the deck like a curtain wall. All panels are the same width, sized to ground elevation. They are quite beautiful. So, Beautiful, Functional, Inexpensive, Robust, Ease of Assembly, Ease of Installation, Low Maintenance.
